How to choose a knitted jumper: wool, alpaca, mohair or cotton
A knitted jumper is something you wear many times a season, so it pays to know what it is made of. The yarn decides how warm it is, how it feels against the skin and how it holds up after many washes. Here is a short guide to the materials in our knitwear.
Wool
Wool keeps you warm even when it gets a little damp, and it does not need washing as often as other materials. Airing it out is often enough. A blend of wool and a synthetic fibre such as polyamide makes the knit stronger and helps it keep its shape.
Alpaca
Alpaca is softer and lighter than ordinary wool and feels warm without being heavy. It is a good choice if wool usually feels scratchy on you. Alpaca often has a slightly fluffy surface.
Mohair
Mohair gives the airy, hairy look that makes a simple jumper stand out. It is light but warm and is often blended with other fibres so the knit holds together.
Cotton
Cotton knit is breathable and easy to care for, so it works from spring to early autumn and for people who get warm easily. It is not as warm as wool, but it is a good layer under a jacket.
How to choose
Think about when you will wear it. For cold days, choose wool or alpaca. For layering indoors or in spring, cotton or a light blend is enough. Every product page lists the exact composition, so you can see what you get.
