How to dress in layers for autumn
Autumn days often start cold and end mild, and you go in and out all day. Layers let you adjust without changing your outfit. Here is a simple method.
1. The base: a blouse, shirt or T-shirt
Start with something thin and comfortable against the skin: a long-sleeved T-shirt, a blouse or a shirt with a collar that can peek out over the next layer.
2. The middle: a knit or a cardigan
A fine knitted jumper, a knitted vest or a cardigan adds warmth without bulk. A cardigan is the most flexible, as you can wear it open or buttoned.
3. The top: a jacket or coat
A blazer works on mild days, a coat or quilted jacket on cold ones. Choose an outer layer with room for a knit underneath.
Keep it balanced
If the top layers are wide, choose straight or slim trousers, and the other way round. Stick to two or three colours that go together, so each layer also works on its own.
