The blouse guide: viscose, silk or cotton
A good blouse works for the office, for dinner and at the weekend. The fabric decides how it falls and how much care it needs, so here is what to look for.
Viscose
Viscose is made from wood pulp. It falls softly, feels cool against the skin and has a light sheen. Viscose is best washed gently at a low temperature, so check the care label.
Silk
Silk is light and smooth with a natural sheen. It regulates temperature well, so it is comfortable in summer and under a knit in winter. Hand wash or a delicate programme keeps it looking good.
Cotton
A cotton blouse or shirt is crisp, breathable and tolerates more washing. It is the easy choice for everyday wear.
Polyester and blends
Polyester and blends crease less and dry fast, which makes them practical for travel and busy days.
How to wear it
Tuck a soft blouse into high-waisted trousers or a skirt, or wear it open over a top. Under a knitted vest or jumper, a blouse with a collar gives a neat finish.
